Dexter

Dexter:

Dexter is a film, which fall into the thriller sub-genre, the opening title are effective in many different ways as they show the morning routine of his day-to-day life.

The sound used in Dexter is effect in a way that it draws people attention to the titles. They have put sound on to also create tension. There is some non-diegetic sound, which is played over the soundtrack; firstly the mosquito is flying around the room, which made the start of the non-diegetic sounds. Secondly the Frying of the meat was also recorded at the place they were filming at.

Next is the editing, throughout the whole of the opening there is a consistency of smooth cuts with no continuity errors. There are mainly straight cuts, which have been edited up to a speed of on average each cut is 2-3 seconds. This is typical of the thriller genre as lots of fast paced editing is used in a thriller film.

The camerawork used in the opening is mainly all-close ups as it follows the typical conventions in a thriller film. This gives the audience the feeling that something is happening off camera, which would affect the person acting on camera. Doing this creates a sense of mystery.

The Mise-en-scene used in the opening is a razor blade, which suits the genre of the film, as it is a sharp object. The shot after this is blood dripping into the sink, which could mean that he is a killer or he could be a victim. This creates tension by not being able know which one he is. Also during the opening the audience don’t get to the face of the actor until the end of the opening credits.
