Question Seven

Question 7:
In comparison to are preliminary task are editing skills have come a long way. There have been many things in which I have learnt such as adding in effects and transitions; all of those techniques helped me produce a good quality media production.  The editing software that we used was IMovie this made the editing easy as the program is basic to use. Firstly when adding in two different shot types their needs to be a transition between them so we added in fades to white and black. We also added in flash’s to white because it needed to create tension during the climax scene. They were used to break the scene up. We had some straight cut shots to give quick and snappy cuts between shots.

The first screenshot shows the shot before the fade to white transition and then the next one shows the shot after the fade to white, we put this transition in because they were two different types of shots.
The camerawork and framing was all deicide before hand, which had been done on a sheet of every shot that we would take. We took out some shots as we felt like they were not effective and they didn’t create tension, the other reason why we took some shots out was because they were necessary and it felt like the thriller opening was dragging on.  The best was to make the shots still is to use a tripod; this was used in every one of shots to make sure that the image coming from the camera is still.  In our thriller we only used natural light, as we wanted to make it look like a mid-day investigation. The only problem with using the natural light is that it is likely to change, to conquer this we didn’t film in direct sunlight. We were sheltered in a small build were half of the roof was there so we decided to film under it. The other reason why we didn’t want to film in direct sunlight is because as the day progresses the sunlight moves round even through the cracks. The comparison between the sunlight and focused light is that they give off different styles of light for example the sunlight is weak and is unpredictable where as the focus light is strong and can be set at many different settings/brightness’.

The strengths of our preliminary task were that there were no continuity errors. This made the smoother running of the film. The skills that I have developed were continuity, 180-degree rule; shot reverse shot and match on action. We were successful in shooting out thriller by learning and putting into practice what we have learnt in to the final product. Are planning that was changed on the day was a few shots and where the notice board was being filmed. The reason why some of the shots were changed was because of the direction of the sun so we used insinuative and change the shot keeping it similar to the shot we had planed. The noticed board was filed at a different location, as the camera didn’t work.

In the first screenshot in the preliminary video it shows the transaction between the first shot before the door and the shot afterwards. We cut the two shots down and made sure that the there was no continuity errors and put is a straight cuts to keep the audience interested.

There are many different shot types that could have been used in the opening of our thriller; conventionally they mainly use close-ups to give the audience a sense of mystery of what is happing off camera. The main shot types that we wanted to use was mid shots to close-ups so the audience doesn’t know what is going on and where the actor is. The main point of doing this is to create tension. Altogether I have developed my skills in shooting and editing to make an effective thriller opening.

Question Six

I have learnt by using the camera not to shoot facing the sun as the is a glare on the picture when looking back at the footage also I have learnt that when using the camera without a tripod you need a steady hand as the footage will come out shaky. Are group couldn't use some of the footage as it was too shaky. In are movie there is a lot of editing skills used for example there is flashes to white, when putting them in we needed to cut the clip up and then add them in. Next we needed to make the clips run smoothly which meant chopping it down so there were no continuity errors. After that there were shaky parts of the footage so we added stabilises over the whole clip.

The camerawork in the clip took along time to master, the things that I learnt from it was that I needed to use a tripod throughout the whole filming time this ensured that there would be no jumpy and unusable footage. Another important piece of knowledge that I have learnt is that framing is important in all shots which are taken, both the rule of thirds and the golden mean came in handy throughout the filming process.

The editing was all done on iMovie, we needed to make the thriller opening realistic to the audience witch meant it needed to be fluent with no continuity errors in it. We started to import the footage off the SD card. Next we needed to get the structure of the narrative right in order for the film to make sense. After all of that the editing speed needed to be created to create more tension in the slower build up to the climax of the film. We also took out parts to make it flow well this is because it was dragging on in the less important parts. We used no diegetic sound as we had a sound track that filled the whole opening. The sound track that we used created tension as it creates a suspense atmosphere.

The other technologies that used were Garage band that allows you to record and add in loops for a perfect sound track that matches the music with the video. The other software that I used was Logic Pro X this is what I used to record the other instruments in; I used this as it has a higher quality sound running at a 64Bit rate.  After that I imported in to garage band ready to put into the IMovie file. In the screen shot is shows what program I was using to make and record the sound track. The second one shows where I finished the program was called Logic Pro X. The first one shows Garage band this program let me be able to add sound in which I can record and loops, which are pre-recorded on the software. This software also lets me write music for film and lets me add the clips I want.

Question Five

Sound:

I made the opening appeal to my audience because firstly the sound track needed to create and build tension, I went about doing this by starting of with only a single instrument playing soloing it off from the other instruments making sure that it was doubled tracked to make it sound ‘beefier’. Next I added in another instrument, which was both violins, and woodwind instruments such as flutes. Those were there to grab the audience attention and to make them have more interest in the thriller. Altogether the sound in the thriller was to create and build tension also we didn't feel like we had the right equipment to create dialogue in the thriller.

Camerawork and Editing:

There was a wide range of shot types to attract the audience such as an extreme long shot at the start to maybe catch the attention of the audience members. In the start of James Bond there is always an action scene to keep the audience interested. They have a wide range of shots such as extreme long shots to show where the scene is happing this is normally in a big vast environment to show the audience all the opportunity’s where potentially the actors could hurt themselves.
We fulfilled the audience expectations by them wanting to see mystery which we created by not showing who the victim was or the masked killer was before the film titles had been shown, this created a large amount of mystery around who the characters are. This for filled the audiences expectations as they did get a sense of mystery from the thriller. It keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. This is typical of the thriller genre because they need to keep the audience interested to make them watch the rest of the film.

My audience responded to my thriller by saying overall it was good, “change some of the music to fit the flashbacks to white”. They responded on a website called Poll Everywhere which is a website where you can text in anything and it would be shown up for the group to analysis. I believe looking back on the opening that we should of added in brass stabs to build more tension and to make the audience feel jumpy from the loud and sudden non-diegetic stabs. The general conventions from a normal thriller are the music builds up leading to the climax; this is what I did slowly building up adding in more interments until the finished product sounded good. The instruments that I used were typical of the thriller genre, string instruments such as violins and harps.  Another genre convention was fast paced editing which was done with flashes to white. This is typical of any thriller as it shows action is happing, it also creates tension.

The Sherlock holms entry sound similar in the way that it builds up with many instruments added in as the intro goes along. The start starts off slowly and then it builds up into a full sound track, which both soundtracks do. The main purpose of doing this is to build tension and to make the audience feel some emotion when watching the opening. It needs to be effective and powerful at the same time to make the audiences feel scared. The thriller opening is made to attract an audience to watch the rest of the film, which makes an effective sound track, is needed to do that.

Mise-en-scene:

The costumes in the thriller need to be realistic so we had to get some realistic army and detective uniform, the start of the thriller opening shows Luke, the detective wear smart cloths and a coat and at the end of it I, Matthew am wearing a tactical vest which the military would wear. This make it a more believable and better to watch thriller. The makeup was put on Sam the victim. We managed to make a realistic bruise around the eye to make the thriller to seem more believable.

Question Four

Who would be the audience for you product?

The audience for my product is male aged between 16-25 with demographics of class C2 and above. A typical audience member would be a skilled worker such as a plumber or electrician who may have a small family. They would watch mainly thrillers with crime, action and horrors all as sub-genres. The taste in clothes and shopping would be similar throughout the people. Those people would be best suited to late night TV to relax after a hard days work, the programs that they would watch would be average late night TV such as ‘X Factor’ and ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’.

I researched my audience by firstly looking online to see what type of audience would watch a thriller, by doing this I found out there were a lot of young to middle age men that liked it so I decided that this age would be best as it would get the most attention. The next step I took was looking at the demographics and psychographics of the potential audience members. The demographics were C2, which are skilled workers, and they have a large amount of working hour with a usual working day of nine till five. Altogether I targeted all of my research at this group, as they are the most likely to watch my thriller. The findings that we found for the audience was all that we needed to put in and what we had started to plan for our thriller opening. The audience’s expectations were that they wanted the regular conventions of a thriller, those consisted of things such as music, which fits the genre and sets the mood and good use of camera shots to build tension. The BBFC age rating that I will have on my thriller would be 15 so that it appeals to the audience and has a large audience. I also choose an age rating of 15 because if a sixteen year old was wanting to watch it and realized that it is a 12 then they may think that it is too childish for them. The content in the film show weapons such as guns and knifes which are not suitable for 12 years olds to watch and see. There are some scenes of violence and dead body’s also shown in the thriller opening, this means that the age rating needs to be 15 or higher. This age rating will affect my target audience by not being able to sell the film too fewer than fifteens potentially making the audience smaller. A 15 rating which will affect my film is violence, there can be strong violence in it but it can inflict pain or injury for long periods of time. This is on the BBFC website for regulations for 15s Altogether the age rating will effect my audience because the will be certain restrictions on what they can see and who can see it. The age rating will affect me, as I will not be able to show graphic images, which show pain and injury for long periods of time. The vox pop that we di showed us that the audience is there for a thriller in which the age rating is 16. They liked action scene in which we try to include in our thriller opening.

An audience profile of a typical audience member:

A typical audience member is a man who watch’s up to 3hours of TV a day, which are mainly sports this person would be aged around 16-34. They like most action films such as Fast and Furious and James Bond. They would work a normal day to day routine from 9 until 5 and will have the weekend to relax.

Question Three

The institution that might distribute my media product is Hammer productions, I choose this because it is UK based and this is where I filmed my thriller opening. The production ident is “Star Crossed Productions”; we choose this name as we got inspiration from Universal Pictures. The main reason why it is in the sky is because stars are in the skies, “crossed” means unlucky because in the thriller there is somebody who is unlucky and dies first off, next the detective dies from finding the dead body. The main reason why we choose Hammer productions is because they do horrors very well for example in 2012 they did Women in Black. This did very well on its first day of release.

The money from the film might come from sponsors and big film produces such as Sony or Paramount Pictures. Those both as they make a lot of money from doing films and they would take most of the profit if they produced and sold it, it would be good for them because they would have there name in which people can trust to buy as they are a large company which a lot of people know and trust. Similar films that Paramount pictures have produced are Top Gun, which are a thriller but not crime. This shows how successful the production companies have been.

The money to fund the film may come from sponsors and big production companies such as Sony or Paramount; those production companies normally get separate distributers to distribute the film. The price range of the thriller will be dependent on how long it is. The production company that I choose to produce my film is ‘Hammer’, I choose this because they are based in Britain and they have the same genre range as the thriller that I have filmed. This production company is one of the oldest in Britain and I well known throughout the film producing industry. The most up-to-date films that the Hammer Production Company has done are Women in Black and Wake Wood. They have produced for both of Women in Black and Wake Woods.

There are various people that are shown in the opening titles, as they are important, they have specific roles in producing the film. The order that this company has done it in is that the most important people come last and closer to the action and the less important people or the majority of people who did specific roles in producing the role. The lead produce overseas everything produced in the studios.

My film would be similar to Women In Black in a way that there are jump scares and fast paced editing. This film follows the general conventions of an ordinary thriller. Also the same production company as the one our thriller would be, ‘Hammer Studios’, produced Women In Black. Sherlock Holms is another good example of what our thriller would look like and follow conventions along the same path as that was our stating point for ideas such as the flash backs in the mind.

This production company would distribute my product as it is a thriller and that is what they specialize in. They would reach their target audience by making the cover appealing for them, maybe taking screen grabs from inside the film to put on.
